Local youngster grows hair for good

Hair to be cut on May 12 to be donated to Wigs for Kids B.C. Then, Gage Archer will grow it all back again

- By BARB AGUIAR

In less than a month, Gage Archer, a Grade 5 student at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, will be getting his Àrst hair cut since June 2016.

Archer and his cousin will be at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver May 12 to have their hair cut at the Balding for Dollars event, which raises money to directly support children and their families during and after cancer treatment. Last year, Balding for Dollars saw over 500 people gather at B.C. Children’s Hospital to shave their heads or cut off their locks.

Archer’s hair, which now reaches past his shoulders, will be donated to Wigs 4 Kids B.C., which works to provide a free wig for every British Columbia child who needs one.

The kind-hearted boy was inspired by his cousin and his aunt who both survived a cancer diagnosis when they were in their teens. They both needed wigs.

Archer has an online fundraising page to raise money for B.C. Children’s Hospital which has already raised over $3,500 for Balding for Dollars, including a cheque for $1,000 from Go Fund Me for being a kid hero.

There will be a bake sale at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Saturday from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. to raise money for Balding for Dollars.

The teasing Archer initially faced when he began to grow his hair has diminished.

“People are accepting his for the way he is,” said Lori Rapp, Archer’s grandmother.

Archer was recognized by a local cable wake park as its kid of the year in 2017 and received a wake board inscribed with the words “With great hair comes great responsibility,” as well as some lessons.

After his hair is cut, Archer plans to start growing it again to donate it to Wigs 4 Kids.
