No room for homophobia in politics

-

It’s pretty sad when you’re expelled from your party by Doug Ford. Such is the case for Tanya Granic Allen ,who is no longer the Progressive Conservative candidate in Mississauga Centre in the upcoming Ontario provincial election.

Granic Allen, an anti-sex education crusader, finished last in her bid for the party leadership, but threw her support behind Ford. When the winner was declared hours after everyone had gone home, Granic Allen was the only candidate standing by Ford’s side.

Ford, expected by some to be Ontario’s Trump, is a tell-itlike-it-is kind of guy. But, the new leader found himself in a situation where he had no choice but to get rid of her.

Granic Allen’s greatest concern is changing the sex education curriculum in Ontario classrooms. How dare our educators teach children that some kids have two mommies or two daddies.

But, elections today are nastier than ever, thanks to the internet. Everybody and their dog has access to a video recorder on their phone.

This past weekend, footage was posted on the Liberal website showing Granic Allen at a speaking engagement.

She said Croatia is a country “trying to push radical sexualization on the young, or gay marriage. I almost vomit in disbelief.”

Croatia? What does that have to do with anything?

She previously said that women should not wear burkas in public.

Somebody clearly didn’t do a good enough job screening the candidates. Homophobic statements will disqualify you from seeking higher office in Canada. And so it should. With LGBTQ teens being the second-highest suicide demographic group in Canada, our leaders should be preaching inclusion, not hatred.

As a self-professed Christian, Granic Allen should understand this better than anyone.

Free speech is one thing. Hate speech is another.
