New YMCA program for older adults aims to encourage physical activity

-

The YMCA of Okanagan is set to launch a new community program, called YMCA Choose to Move, providing more free opportunities for older adults in B.C. to be active and connect with a social network.

“Without the right guidance, being physically active, especially with a chronic condition, can be challenging and you might not know where to start,” said Kelowna Family Y health and fitness manager Serena Moser.

“This program will provide the regular guidance needed to begin and maintain healthy activity, while also bringing people together in an encouraging, non-intimidating social setting.”

Choose to Move is a six-month physical activity program, based on the best research, that helps break down barriers to physical activity. Working with a certified activity coach, participants design a personalized physical activity program based on their interests, goals and abilities. Participants are supported throughout the program with opportunities to connect with other Choose to Move participants through monthly motivational meetings.

Helping adults experience optimal health as they age is a top priority at the Y.
