Westside resort proposal advanced to public hearing
A major new development proposed for Campbell Road in West Kelowna has been advanced by city council to a public hearing.
The project, at 2211 Campbell Rd., would include 300 homes and vacation rentals, a 180-room hotel and a marina. Buildings would rise up to 10 storeys.
The property covers seven hectares and includes almost 300 metres of lakeshore.
City staff want to get direction from council, based on public feedback, whether there is support for the necessary zoning change before getting into detailed negotiations with the would-be developer.
The proposed residential density would be higher than any other location in West Kelowna. However, it has already been downsized from an original design that included three 15-storey towers.
“The project has been envisioned as a comprehensively designed lakefront community,” says the would-be developer, Winnipeg-based Landstar. “We seek to utilize a low-impact and environmentally friendly built form that minimizes disturbance to the property and neighbourhood.”
Sixty per cent of the property would be preserved as a natural area or orchard and vineyard, the developer says.
Council has already received a petition from people opposed to the project, dubbed Blackmun Bay Hillside Village, with almost 300 signatures.
“I think it’s important we hear from everyone on this . . . . We’ll see where it goes,” Mayor Doug Findlater said at last week’s council meeting.
