Peachland repped in Rutland tonight

- — Okanagan Weekend Staff

Two of Peachland’s boxers will be competing at the Rutland Centennial Hall tonight at 7 p.m.

Jackson Jones, a 17-year-old heavyweight with a 0-0-1 record, will step into the squared circle.

As will Jimmy Hollier, a 22-year-old with a 2-0-2 record in the 135-pound division.

Hollier, from West Kelowna, is the Peachland Boxing Club’s head coach.

This submission by assistant coach Alex Lang depicts Hoiller’s most recent fight.

“Pacta sunt servanda” is a Latin saying that translates as “agreements must be kept” and no one keeps to their word more than Hoiller.

Three weeks ago, he was invited as a last-minute entry to a fight card in Williams Lake. The boxing club in Williams Lake wouldn’t have had a fight for one of their most promising up-and-comers, Arthur Mclellan, if they could not quickly find someone in his weight class.

Due to a scheduling conflict, one potential opponent had to opt out of the match. They called looking for Hoiller because they remembered that last November when they had a different fighter face him in bronze gloves, he was in the weight class they needed.

Even though the situation was less than ideal, Hoiller accepted the fight and gave Mclellan what he wanted — the main event amateur fight in his hometown with all of his friends and family watching.

Hoiller then gave the hometown hero a fight to remember. Hoiller had Mclellan measured with every jab, had his reach mapped out and had him hitting nothing but air most of the time. But even the few times that Mclellan landed a hit on Hoiller, it was an exchange.

In the second round, Hoiller managed to land a right hand straight leaving Mclellan stunned.

At the end of the third round, the judges gave the fight to Mclellan, but the Peachland Boxing Club could not be more proud knowing that their head coach is a man of his word.
