If you love J.S. Bach, weekend concert in Kelowna is for you
Concert by Early Music Kelowna set for 2 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Cathedral
Early Music Okanagan is presenting an all-Bach concert on Sunday.
Composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) best works will be performed as they would have been in his day.
Early Music Okanagan has gathered an ensemble of Okanagan Symphony Orchestra players: Susan Schaffer, violin; Denis Letourneau, violin; Ashley Kroecher, viola; Olivia Walsh, cello; Akane Setiavan, oboe; Karmen Doucette, bassoon; Cuyler Page, dulcian; and Jim Leonard, harpsichord and organ.
They will play Ich Habe Genug (I am content), a masterpiece cantata for bass, oboe, two violins, viola, and basso continuo.
A chamber choir will join the instrumentalists to perform Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich ( For Thee, O Lord, I long), the first known church cantata, written when Bach was 22 years old.
The soloists will be Eeva-Maria Kopp, soprano, Natalia Polchenko, alto, Conagher Jones, tenor, and Alex Wedensky, bassbaritone. This cantata is said to have caused Bach to throw his shoe at a bassoonist who was not performing the challenging bassoon obbligato up to his standards. Karmen Doucette will be the bassoonist.
An oboe concerto, an organ solo and a string duet will also be on the program.
The concert takes place at St. Michael and All Angels Cathedral on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are: general $30, senior/student $25, kids under 12 free.
Tickets can be purchased at kelownatickets.ca, by calling 250-862-2867, or at the door, where cash and cards will be accepted.
