Rising country star sees maturity in new album
Klick’s concert Friday in West Kelowna will also launch his new album, Working on a Legacy
West Kelowna’s own Ben Klick is celebrating the release of his second album at a free concert next Friday.
Klick has been working on his new album, Working on a Legacy, since the release of his first EP a year and a half ago.
“I wanted it to show more growth as both an artist, a writer, a musician and as a man growing up,” he said.
Klick described Working on a Legacy as being more mature than his previous music.
“There’s a lot more strength behind it,” he said. “This one is very vocally-driven and story-driven from a songwriting perspective compared to the first record.”
Each song is based off personal experiences of both Klick and people on his songwriting team.
“These writing rooms can be a very open book,” said Klick. “Anything you say is accepted . . . where you don’t feel like you’re going to get judged for something you’ve experienced or something you’ve done.”
The new album also differs in that it has more of a traditional flavour, he said.
“This one has a very traditional sound rather than more modern country. It’s got a lot of real instruments with keyboards and guitars and drums.”
Klick spent the last year and a half going back and forth between West Kelowna and Nashville, where he recorded the album, which officially came out on July 31.
The album features seven new songs, three of which have made it into the top 100 on country radio.
The official release party and concert for Klick’s new album will be held at Memorial Park in West Kelowna on Friday, Aug. 24, as the finale to the city’s Music in the Park summer series.
“It will be a really cool opportunity to listen to some songs off of the first record, all the songs off this new record, and have a bunch of fun at a free outdoor amphitheatre that is 10 minutes from my house,” said Klick.
Working on a Legacy will be available to buy at the concert, and it can also be streamed online on all digital downloading platforms.
Opening for Klick will be Shaugnessy Rose at 6:40 p.m., and bluegrass trio Jackson Hollow at 7 p.m. Klick takes the stage at 8 p.m.
