Police release 4 arrested over report of shots fired
Four people who were detained by police in relation to shots being fired in a rural area of Kelowna were released without charges.
According to RCMP, police responded to a report of shots being fired in the Chute Lake Road area Wednesday. It was determined that firearms were being discharged at targets. Two unrelated bystanders in the area became fearful for their own safety. They were forced to take cover when they found themselves down range.
Police controlled access to the area by closing portions of the roadway.
RCMP air services provided additional support.
Specially trained members of the South East District Emergency Response Team were sent in to locate the people who had discharged the firearms. They escorted the fearful bystanders out of harm’s way.
The four people were all found to be in lawful possession of their firearms.
“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that criminality was involved in this case,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a statement. “Although the four individuals were later released from police custody without criminal charge, our investigation remains active. Anyone with any additional information is asked to come forward and speak with police.” No injuries were reported in the incident. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
