Findlater should not run for council

-

Dear Editor: Doug Findlater has had a solid political career on the Westside.

Chair of the Westside Governance Committee, councillor on the first council of the new municipality, 10 years as mayor of West Kelowna.

Then Mayor Findlater decided that he was not going to stand for re-election to the position of mayor because he wanted to spend more time with his family, according to media coverage.

Applause for a well planned political life and a genteel departure from the public arena. Then the bombshell. Findlater changes the goal posts. He announces he will stand for a seat as a councillor.

What a warped legacy that could end up being. What happened to spending more time with the family?

I feel this is a totally unethical path for Findlater to tread.

How many company bosses retire and then interview for a lower position in the same company?

If Findlater does win a seat on council, it will be a very difficult position for the new mayor to be in. How would they establish a stable, functioning council whilst having the ex-mayor constantly looking over their shoulder?

There are plenty of other candidates on the ballot for us to choose from.

So, if Findlater truly has the best interests of West Kelowna at heart, he would withdraw himself from the election and take his well deserved seat as retired elder statesman. Heather Yeats, West Kelowna
