The Americans do Thanksgiving right

- JAMES MILLER

We now interrupt Sass Jordan to bring you today’s Editor’s Notebook column.

With this being the Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted to offer a list of the 10 biggest turkeys in the valley for our Okanagan Top 10. We were all set, but I was worried about the number of calls we’d receive — “You forgot that person!”

Americans do Thanksgiving better than Canadians. A four-day weekend, tons of food, early Christmas shopping and watching the Detroit Lions lose — it’s great!

Bad joke: What’s the difference between chickens and turkeys?

Chickens celebrate Thanksgiving.

Sorry class to give you homework on the holiday weekend. Attention city council candidates in Penticton and Kelowna. I emailed a series of questions for you earlier this week. If, for some reason, it went to your spam folder, email me at the address listed below.

When I first heard of the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga remake of “A Star Is Born,” I thought, “there is no reason why they need to remake this movie for a third time.” I hadn’t been that worked up since Michael Jackson covered “Come Together” (a solid version, but totally unnecessary.) Apparently, “A Star Is Born” (2018) is good. Real good. An Oscar contender. I can’t wait.

Also new in the theaters is Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 11/9,” a two-hour rant about Donald Trump and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder. I’ve been a fan of Moore’s ever since “Roger and Me,” even bumping into him years ago at a Detroit Tigers baseball game. (He sang the Canadian national anthem at the game.) “Fahrenheit 11/9” is OK, but it’s certainly not “Bowling for Columbine” or “Roger and Me.” Heck, it’s not as good as “Sicko.” But, fans of Moore’s style won’t leave the theatre disappointed. He uses very little humour this time around, except for a hilarious theory that Gwen Stefani is responsible for the presidency of Donald J. Trump. (You have to see it for yourself.)

I’ll be out at the Penticton Lakeside Resort tonight enjoying the thirdlast concert by Crosstown Bus, a band which began 53 years ago in Penticton and enjoyed some commercial success in the mid-1970s with the single “High Grass.” The party begins at 7 p.m. and door tickets are $30. I’ll be introducing the band and doing a short pre-concert interview with them. Please say “hello” if you see me.

Happy 70th birthday to local realtor, 2014 Penticton city council candidate and all-around nice guy Garry Gratton. I’m sorry you’re not on the ballot again this year.

Summerland council candidate Ron Kubek, won the 2011 “Pavey Award,” presented annually by the Dogwood Initiative. The satirical award “honours” those considered to be the “worst offenders in contributing to urban sprawl within the Capital Regional District.” The “winners” were selected by an online survey.

Sun’s gonna rise again, I’ll be listenin’ to those lies again.
