Local school district changing its policies now that pot legalized
Letter sent to Central Okanagan parents highlights some of laws meant to keep cannabis out of minors’ hands
In light of recreational cannabis becoming legal in Canada on Wednesday, the superintendent of the Central Okanagan school district sent a letter to parents advising them what this means for their children.
“As a school district, all staff are tasked with fostering a safe and effective learning environment for a vulnerable population,” said Kevin Kaardal, adding public school administrators, teachers and support staff act as role models for students.
Currently, district policies are being amended to include the expectations for students and staff with respect to the legalization of cannabis, said Kaardal.
Kaardal also highlighted some of the laws aimed at preventing access to cannabis by minors:
Cannabis cannot be consumed in or on school property or within a prescribed distance.
It cannot be smoked or vaped in a vehicle or anywhere where tobacco smoking and vaping are prohibited, including a workplace, playground or park, sports field, skate park or other places where children commonly gather or near entrances and exits or at bus stops.
Cannabis cannot be sold or supplied to minors, nor can it be consumed by them.
“If you have questions or require further information on these changes, please contact your school principal or the office of the superintendent,” he wrote.
