Dance like a zombie or learn to cook

It was my birthday yesterday and I’d like to thank those who sent me messages of positive affirmations and cheery one liners. It eases the realization that I am over half a century — what? How come I feel like it’s only my 30th?

I remember my 30th. I was in a music video where I wore a ’70s glitter boob-tube, high-waisted short shorts, knee high socks and rolling skates.

After that, I joined a group of about 20 friends at a trendy pool hall called the Elbow Room, somewhere in Islington. It feels like yesterday

Meanwhile, this week we’ve got some fun things to mention.

————— The weather gets cooler and all I fancy is hot soups stuffed with goodness. Tomorrow night, if I wasn’t in Sorrento performing with my country band, I would be learning to make ramen. This class hosted by Chef Michael Buffett at the Start Fresh Kitchen (1708 Dolphin Ave.) will teach you about tonkotsu, ramen noodles, broths and the magic it takes to bring them all together. The class is $85 and runs from 6-9 p.m. Call 250-212-6079 or visit the website to book your reservation at startfreshkitchen.ca

————— Also on Thursday is Nightcap with Casey Easton. This take-off of a late night talkshow is hosted at the Grateful Fed, downtown on Bernard Avenue. There are interviews with local celebrities, entrepreneurs, whackos and people of interest. This is also recorded for online podcasts at a later date.

Easton is a thespian and entertainer residing here in Kelowna, and I look forward attending one of the weekly Thursday tapings. Show begins at 7 p.m. Reserve your table by calling 250-862-8621 or email: rock@thegratefulfed.ca

————— Back in my early teens, I remember inviting myself over to my friend Jennifer’s house in East Kelowna, after school. She had MTV and we were both obsessed with Michael Jackson’s creative videos.

The Thriller album topped the charts, and with so many great songs, we sang and danced to the choreography. One in particular was the scary zombie dance in title track Thriller, transforming Jackson into a werecat.

This Saturday at Stuart Park at 3 p.m. we can all relive that choreography with a group dance that coincides with the rest of the world doing the same thing at the same time.

This huge event is called “Thrill the World” and it’s hosted by Studio9 School of the Arts.

Arrive early to sign the zombie guest book, bring a non-perishable food donation for the food drive and don’t forget to dress in your best zombie outfit. Every age is welcome. You can learn the dance online at thrilltheworld.com or just come down and follow our dancers.

————— On Saturday, you can keep on dancing when you attend the Winnipeg Social at the Kelowna Curling Club, 551 Recreation Ave.

Julie Masi (Parachute Club vocalist and percussionist) hosts this fundraiser for prostate cancer after losing the love of her life, husband of 32 years Agostino Masi.

Joining Masi on stage will be The Zamboni Brothers, John Delaney, Vicky Nish, Bob Silversides, Jimmy LeGuilloux and drummers Gord Osland and Harvey Kostenchuk

Dance, eat, drink and win donated door prizes all in the name of raising money. Tickets are $40 at the door.

————— Also happening on Saturday night is the Red Dress Gala — for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I am honoured to be performing at this important fundraiser. Last year, my mother had a stroke and then in the beginning of the summer, my father-in-law had one right in front of me.

If it wasn’t for the quick response of the emergency team from ambulance to hospital for both family members, it would have been a very different year.

This fashion show gala supports and educates, empowers and encourages women, and those who love them, to place women’s heart health first. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased through heartandstroke.ca website. The event is held at Manteo Resort, 3762 Lakeshore Rd., beginning at 7 p.m. Wear Red.

————— On Sunday, join in on Spooktacular Pumpkin Walk at Mission Creek on Springfield Road from 3 p.m. onwards. Bring your best carved pumpkins lit with an LED light, then wear your Halloween costume, walk along paths lit by the spooky jack-o-lanterns and vote for your favourites. There are prizes for scariest, funniest and most original jack-o-lanterns. Bring a flashlight. Donations for the food bank will be accepted.

————— It’s poppy season soon and volunteers are needed to help with the Kelowna Legion’s poppy campaign. If you are able to devote some time, contact Vince Lemke at vincelemke@shaw.ca or 250-861-7158.
