Sun’s Richard wins 3 BCFC awards ahead of Cullen Cup

- By Daily Courier Staff

A convincing semifinal victory over the Valley Huskers of Chilliwack didn’t score the Okanagan Sun any individual awards this week, but Conor Richard emerges as a big winner when the B.C. Football Conference announced its major awards for the 2018 regular season. Richard was named the BCFC’s outstanding defensive player, top special teams player and top linebacker, winning three awards as the only Okanagan player to be honoured.

In terms of stat-lines, Richard recorded 27 total tackles, six sacks, two fumble recoveries (returning one for a touchdown), two forced fumbles and three batted balls on defence. On special teams, he tied a BCFC record with six blocked kicks, while also racking up 354 kick-return yards with one TD and an average of 23.6 yards per return.

The rest of the conference award winners as well as the weekly award winners can be found online at bcfootballconference.com. Looking ahead to the Cullen Cup, the Sun will host the Langley Rams in the BCFC’s championship game on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.

The Sun advanced with a 47-21 win over Chilliwack — getting out to an early 15-0 lead and then pulling away in the second half after the Huskers had closed to within 15-14 at the break. Okanagan led 26-15 through three quarters and outscored the Huskers 21-6 in the final frame.

Langley defeated the Vancouver Island Raiders 37-26 in the other semifinal.

The Cullen Cup can be watched live on PPV at BCFCTV.COM. It is a battle between the top two teams from the regular season, with the Sun finishing first at 7-2-1 and the Rams placing second at 7-3-0 ahead of the Raiders and Huskers, who were both 6-4-0.
