Tools worth thousands stolen in Vernon

- By Daily Courier Staff

Police are investigating after thousands of dollars’ worth of industrial tools were stolen from a Vernon business Monday morning.

Vernon RCMP received a report of a break and enter into a local business in the 200 block of 18 Avenue.

The incident is believed to have happened between 4 and 6 a.m.

The suspect or suspects gained entry through a fence, damaging utility trailers and stealing $10,000 worth of industrial tools.

Tools stolen include numerous Makita, Milwaukee and Dewalt drills, saws and levels.

“Incidents such as this are very disheartening for local business owners, who rely on these tools to provide trades to the community,” said Const. Kelly Brett.

These types of thefts have been on the rise in Vernon, she said.

“The RCMP is now focused on the investigations revolving around the recent spike in tool thefts.”

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information regarding the sale of stolen tools or the thefts themselves.

RCMP are warning people about buying discounted tools from individuals rather than from legitimate businesses, because they likely are stolen.

“Buying stolen property rewards criminal activity and contributes to increased property theft and related crimes, including stolen vehicles, drugs, weapons and violent crimes,” said Brett, adding it is a crime to purchase an item believed to be stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 250-545-7171 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous.
