More than 100 turkeys donated to food bank

More than 100 families in the Central Okanagan will have turkeys to cook for Christmas dinner this year thanks to a donation by the Kelowna Club and Safeway Canada.

Club members delivered 101 turkeys to the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank Thursday morning.

“We understand there’s a need in the community,” said Kit Kellendonk, treasurer of the Kelowna Club. “We think the food bank does a great job, and we’re very pleased to be able to do it and help them out each and every year.”

The club has been partnering with Safeway to deliver turkeys to the food bank for about five years.

This is one of several ways the club, which was founded in 1904, supports the community, said Kellendonk.

“It’s absolutely our deepest pleasure to be able to do this each and every year.”

David Purdon, operations manager with the food bank, happily received all 101 turkeys, which were loaded into the Kelowna warehouse. “We’re elated to receive this,” he said. Local families will receive the turkeys as part of Christmas hampers being put together by the food bank Dec. 17-21.

“We’re going to do between 1,500 and 1,700 hampers here in Kelowna and West Kelowna,” said Purdon. “This is going to make the difference between a sad Christmas dinner and a fantastic Christmas dinner for families.”
