- —Okanagan Weekend staff

Kelowna Actors Studio launches the “On The Edge” series next week with the Pulitzer Prize-winning, groundbreaking rock musical “Next to Normal: An Honest Portrayal of Mental Illness” by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt.

With a thrilling contemporary score, Next to Normal was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2008, including best musical and best score.

It is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other while Diana Goodman, mother to Natalie and Gabe and husband to Dan, struggles through depression and mental illness. The family can only sit back and watch as she tries to piece together her life and return her house and family back to normal.

The play is being staged in the Work Room, presently under construction at the Kelowna Actors Studio’s new secondary location at 1002600 Enterprise Way. It houses their administration offices, their foundation and academy, set, props, the costume departments and it’s the new home of Kelowna Tickets.

The cast includes Chad Abrahamson, Laura Lebbon, Desmond Paranteau, Cassidy Hergott, Jordan Davies and Pete MacLeod . Dawn Ewen is directing and Spencer Bach is the show’s musical director

The On the Edge series aims to present critically-acclaimed, ground breaking theatre best suited for mature audiences.

The production contains mature subject matter and language and is not suitable for children.

Next to Normal is an add-on show, not included in the main stage season subscriptions. For tickets and addition information visit: www.KelownaActorsStudio.com or phone Kelowna Tickets at 250-862-2867.
