Woman killed in Vernon crash

-

A woman is dead following a crash Sunday afternoon on Highway 97 in Vernon.

Vernon RCMP, BC Ambulance and Vernon Fire Rescue responded to a motor-vehicle incident on Highway 97 near Birnie Road just after 3 p.m.

Three vehicles collided with each other. Seven people were involved in the crash.

Civilians administered first aid to injured people prior to the arrival of emergency services, but one woman died from her injuries.

Other injured people were taken to the hospital.

“The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing. However, it is alleged by witnesses that one vehicle was driving dangerously just before the incident occurred,” said Const. Kelly Brett.

The road was closed for hours so an RCMP collision analyst could examine the scene.

The status of the people injured in the crash is unknown, said Brett.

Seniors waiting to move in

Water damage will delay the move-in date for people chosen to live at a new seniors complex in Peachland.

About 20 of the 74 newly finished suites at the Residences on Sixth were flooded on Jan. 3.

“The investigation as to the cause is ongoing, and it is not yet known if this situation resulted from an accident or an act of vandalism,” reads an update on the project posted Monday on the town of Peachland’s website.

“Restoration work is underway, and the board hopes to get all the new tenants into the building as soon as possible,” the post states.

More than 150 applications were received from people interested in living at the new building, which was funded in large part by BC Housing. Move-in had been planned for late January.

Most of the suites were earmarked for low-income people or those with special needs.
