School zones are back in effect

The winter break is over for Central Okanagan school students and Kelowna Regional RCMP are encouraging motorists to again be vigilant for pedestrians, and to maintain safe speeds and travel within the posted speed limits in school zones across the valley.

RCMP Const. Julie Miller, having now served five months of her first posting at the West Kelowna detachment, has been working on problem-solving strategies to improve safety in area school zones.

Miller emphasizes that, “with the persistent winter conditions, extra caution will be needed to ensure the safety of young students and young crossing guards at busy school pedestrian crossings.

“With the New Year, police are increasing their efforts to ensure safer roadways throughout our community and around our schools.”

RCMP remind motorists that if caught speeding in a school zone, between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on a school day, drivers could face a minimum fine of $196 and three Driver Penalty Points (DPP), under section 147 (1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Motorists are also reminded that it is mandatory to yield for school buses when their lights are flashing. Failure to do so could result in the driver or a vehicle’s registered owner being issued a $368 fine.

“Let’s ensure a safe remainder of the school year, and renewed diligence in school zones,” added Miller.
