Local skiers medal at Lake Placid games

Five young athletes from the Telemark Nordic Club competed at the Internatio­nal Children’s Games in Lake Placid. N.Y. Five young athletes with Team Telemark competed this week at the Internatio­nal Children’s games.

Sofie Steinruck captured silver medals in distance and relay.

Timur McNern won three medals in biathlon - gold in relay, silver in distance and bronze in sprint.

The games finished with the local athletes participat­ing in a fun relay with skiers from other countries.

Meanwhile, Telemark skiers were among 250 athletes who gathered at Nickle Plate Nordic Centre near Penticton recently for the first BC Cup races of the year.

Freestyle-technique races were held on Saturday and classic technique on Sunday.

Results:

Peewee boys: Kai Redman, fourth, Erik Urness, fifth.

Peewee girls: Ayla MusselmanB­ell, fourth (2nd on Saturday), Eloise Akins, 13th.

Bantam girls: Chloe Shivers, third. Midget boys: 2 Justin Siever, second; Finn Redman, seventh; Jonah Hawes, eighth; Evan Edwards,12th; Jacob Miller, 13th; Rowan Musselman-Bell, 27th. Midget girls: Kendra Shaw, 15th. Junior boys: Grayson McKinnon, second; Tristan Lee, fourth; Connor Hobbs, fifth; Colton Blaney, 14th.

Juvenile boys: Ian Mayer, third; Garret Siever, fifth.

Junior girls; Carolyn Shaw, 10th. Junior open men: The first six places were Telemark-trained athletes.

“We are extremely proud of our athletes. It is thanks to a great volunteer team supporting these young athletes, we had Team Telemark on the podium repeatedly throughout the weekend,” said club president Brent Hobbs.
