City Park waterpark to reopen this summer

- By RON SEYMOUR

The water park in City Park will re-open this summer with low-flow nozzles.

Council is expected today to authorize $410,000 in repairs to the popular children's play feature, which has been closed since the spring of 2017.

High lake levels that year damaged the water park, flooding and destroying some underground equipment.

That initial damage was compounded by silt, sand, and debris being trapped in water lines, then freezing during the winter of 201718. About 40 per cent of the water lines were damaged by the freezing, a report to council states.

For almost two years, the city has worked with an insurance company to determine the extent of the damage and work out the repair costs. Approval of a $410,000 claim is "expected soon", the report to council states.

To ensure the park is not closed for a third successive summer, the recommendation is for council to approve the expense now and then reimburse municipal coffers with the expected insurance payout.

As part of the repairs, the water park will be connected directly to the city's sanitary sewers. There had been an on-site, underground water treatment system prior to the flooding.

There will be a "net saving" to the city in reducing staffing for and operation of an on-site water treatment system, staff say. As well, plans are for low-flow nozzles to reduce the amount of water sprayed at the park.
