Woman badly hurt intervening in fight
VANCOUVER — A woman has been seriously injured after being attacked with a weapon while trying to intervene in a fight between a couple on the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus.
RCMP say in a news release that the woman was hurt Thursday after stepping into the altercation between a man and woman she didn’t know.
Mounties say the injured woman was rushed to hospital and is expected to recover, while both the man and woman involved in the dispute ran from the area separately.
Nude-photo threats result in charges
Regina police have charged a teen with extortion and uttering threats over allegations that he threatened a girl who refused to send him nude photos.
Police say a high school student reported receiving alarming social media messages on Monday. Investigators say the requests for nude photos were from an anonymous messenger. When she refused to send the photos, the person messaging her threatened to bring a bomb and a gun to her school.
The 17-year-old boy who has been charged cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
More help urged for jailed women
OTTAWA — Amnesty International says Canada must loudly and specifically speak out against Saudi Arabia for jailing women who have been fighting for rights in their country.
Canada was one of three dozen countries that jointly signed a United Nations Human Rights Council statement this week condemning Saudi Arabia for the arrests of 10 mainly female activists who have been jailed as part of a crackdown on rights advocates in the kingdom.
Canada did also speak out against Saudi Arabia for jailing female activists last summer.
Amnesty International Canada’s gender-rights campaigner, Jacqueline Hansen, says Canada has been muted in its calls for action since then.
