Landeskog out with upper-body injury

-

DENVER — The playoff-chasing Colorado Avalanche will be without captain Gabriel Landeskog for four-to-six weeks with an upper-body injury.

Coach Jared Bednar called missing Landeskog a “huge loss.”

The All-Star forward was hurt in the third period Thursday at Dallas when he collided with Stars goaltender Ben Bishop. Landeskog has a career-best 33 goals this season, including an NHLleading 19 in the third period.

The 26-year-old Landeskog was the second overall pick by Colorado in 2011. He has 410 career points.

Colorado is on the outside of the playoff picture with 14 games to play. The team hosts Buffalo today.

Another fan spoils Scottish soccer tilt

EDINBURGH, Scotland — Scottish soccer suffered another night of controversy on Friday as Rangers drew 1-1 at Hibernian.

Hibernian’s Florian Kamberi scored the equalizer with 15 minutes left in the Premiership game at Easter Road, but the result was overshadowed by a fan who jumped out of the home end and confronted Rangers captain James Tavernier.

The fan kicked the ball away as Tavernier went to pick it up and the two briefly squared off before security and police dragged the man away.

The incident comes six days after Celtic winger Scott Sinclair had a bottle thrown at him during a Scottish Cup quarterfinal game against Hibs.

Orioles acquire OF Smith from Toronto

SARASOTA, Fla. — Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. has been acquired by the Baltimore Orioles from the Toronto Blue Jays for international signing bonus pool allocation.

Smith hit .293 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 47 games with Toronto over the past two seasons.

The 26-year-old is the son of former major leaguer Dwight Smith Sr., who played for the Orioles in 1994.

To make room for Smith on the 40man roster, Baltimore designated 30year-old left-hander Josh Osich for assignment on Friday.

Baltimore acquired Osich off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Feb. 19. Osich is 6-5 with a 5.01 ERA in 160 games with the Giants over the last four seasons.

Curry surprises girl who helped design

OAKLAND, Calif. — Steph Curry dropped in on a television interview to surprise a 9-year-old girl who helped design the Golden State Warriors star’s signature shoe.

Riley Morrison of Napa, California, was doing an interview Friday on CBS about the shoes when Curry walked in. He gave her a pair and rebounded for her while she shot baskets.

Riley was invited to help design the Curry 6 model after she wrote to tell him she couldn’t buy his shoes because they weren’t available for girls on the Under Armour website. They were only marketed to boys. The two-time MVP and five-time All-Star replied with an apology, saying in a handwritten note that he’s been working with the company to remedy the situation.

He also invited her to the Warriors home game on Friday, which was International Women’s Day.
