Far Cry New Dawn (Rated M for Mature), (Xbox One,PS4, PC): Far Cry 5 debuted less the a year ago and Ubisoft is throwing us back into Hope County after the nuclear explosion of the previous game.

New Dawn drops players into an uberbright landscape filled with almost neon pink vegetation.

The game is set 17 years after the nuclear explosion and the land — complete with what buildings are left — is covered with dense vines and plants. The game has you choosing your character at the start of the game and throws you into the fight against a group of viscous enemies called the Highwaymen and their leaders, the evil twin sisters.

The game’s map, while looking familiar, will be different enough so it doesn’t feel like you’re replaying the previous game. The weapons and items you get are all recycled parts from other items used to create that weapon.

The game does a great job of introducing new characters that will provide backup from a huge warthog, a dog and some truly colourful characters. These characters are called “Guns for Hire.”

They can help you in taking over outposts and in missions. The game play is a mix of fast and fluid action with a nice mix of role- playing elements. These new RPG elements come from points that are earned from taking over outposts, challenges and more.

Once earned, you can focus on a number of skills that will create the ultimate bad ass. Focus on stealth, weapons and more, you can also create more powerful weaponry to take on even stronger enemies.

The action is fast and chaotic at times. If you want to take a stealthier approach, the game lets you take out enemies silently —hand to hand or from a far with a silenced weapon. Your base of operations is called Prosperity. Here you can upgrade different parts like your workbench, garage, training centre and more.

Upgrading your workbench unlocks better weapons and upgrading your garage gives you fast, and better vehicles. All these upgrades require resources, which can be scavenged throughout the world through outposts, story missions, side missions or even treasure hunts.

These treasure hunts are very addictive, a character in the game can give a general location where a clue is located. Once you read the clue, it is up to you to find a way into a location by solving that clue. These hunts will give you a bunch of resources, and points to level up your character. Another side activity in Far Cry 5 is the ability to hunt and fish. The difference is these animals have mutated from the radiation so deer can be white with pink antlers or some animals can have huge boil-looking growths as their only weak points.

Even fish can be a challenge if you’re not careful. There are also expeditions that will take you to different maps like Aircraft carriers and others.

One thing we need to address is the fact that the game is only $40, so it’s not a full retail price. Some may not like that you need to upgrade your character and base to complete later story missions, but I found myself exploring the map so much it was never an issue for me.

You can customize your character in all the weirdness you see fit from a unicorn onesie to a matching three-wheel motorcycle. The level of strangeness is up to you.

The ability to play the entire game with a buddy makes the story even more compelling.

This game will more than give you your money’s worth. If you’re looking to get back into Hope County in a colourful experience unlike others, pick up this selfcontained game that doesn’t require Far Cry 5 to play.

Far Cry New Dawn gets a buy and is a steal for $40.
