Broken gas line prompts detour

-

A gas line struck Friday afternoon closed access to Eastside Road for almost two hours.

City of Penticton communications manager Philip Cooper said he could not speak to the specifics of what had happened, but that a traffic detour had been set up.

The line was struck near the bottom of Crescent Hill, not far from Lee Avenue, and there was a strong odour of gas in the area.

FortisBC was assisting road crews at the scene.

Cars travelling south on South Main Street were being directed down Yorkton Avenue, and motorists were being advised by crew members on the scene to use Highway 97 to travel to Okanagan Falls.

Motorists driving north along Eastside Road into Penticton were detoured along Parkview Street until one-way traffic later opened on South Main Street.

Cooper said the broken gas line posed no risk to the public.

City crews have been working for some time on paving South Main Street.
