Writer appreciates hearing from critics

Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to recent letters by Roderick Macintosh and John Bailey.

Article 2 of the proposed COVID-19 relief bill from last week would have given the Liberal government complete control over taxing and spending without any Parliamentary oversight.

Kudos to Conservative MP Scott Reid that discovered this plot to hijack our democratic rights and freedoms.

True to Liberal form, Article 2 was peppered throughout the bill in 20 different spots. During the world wars, the governments of the time didn’t even consider a power grab like this.

Macintosh naively thought political sniping would reach a truce and that would be acceptable if Justin Trudeau didn’t try to usurp our constitution.

Bailey had a point when he claimed the Bloc Quebecois was comfortable with the bill. To be accurate, the Bloc was willing to meet the Liberals “halfway” and let them have their way until September.

What actually happened is the Liberals now have taxing and spending powers, with Parliamentary oversight, until Sept. 30.

I respect Macintosh and Bailey’s opinion on what I wrote about, if one chooses to participate in the editorial columns one if fair game for criticism.

What I take issue with is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trying a dirty underhanded trick to try to govern with complete impunity for 21 months.

Even if it was a month, it would be tantamount to tyranny. No taxation without representation is key regardless of the whom is in power and once again I task everyone to remember this ill-fated stunt by Trudeau when they cast their ballots in the next federal election.
