Volunteers never tire of helping

- By BARB AGUIAR

The Westside Health Network Society hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Tea last Tuesday to thank those who give their time to make a huge difference in the lives older adults in our community.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the volunteers have stuck with the society and using safety measures have continued to assist those people in need.

“They are such an asset to this community,” said Sonia Newman, executive director for the Westside Health Network Society. “I can’t say enough good about them.

Health Network Society volunteers help older adults with everything from transportation to medical appointments, to filling out income tax forms and visits.

The work they do helps older adults, many who don’t have family nearby, stay in their own homes for longer.

“There’s no better place than being your own home with some independence and some dignity,” said Newman.

For many, volunteering makes them feel good. Maureen English has been a volunteer driver with the Westside Health Network Society for 12 years. There is a big need, she said, adding the clients are so appreciative.

“I love it,” said volunteer Collette Girard. “It keeps my brain going.”

Retired nurse Valerie MacLean enjoys meeting people as a volunteer driver.

For Ruth Wiebe, volunteering with the Happy Hookers who knit, crochet and craft items to give away to the community, allows her to knit without filling her house with completed projects. The Happy Hookers are always looking for wool and material donations.

“It feels good to give back,” she said.
