A little help from new friends

- DEAR EDITOR: Doreen Zyderveld-Hagel, Kelowna

Who says chivalry is dead?

The definition of chivalry is a gallant or distinguished gentleman with medieval knighthood qualities, or otherwise a heroic, thoughtful individual.

In my case I experienced those qualities in both genders as of late, and all because of a bag of flour.

I purchased a 10-pound bag flour at Freshco and a woman offered to have me go in front of her in the line because I had only one item and was clearly struggling. The next day I had to return it because it was the wrong type of flour and again an older woman offered me to go in front of her at the till. I was very grateful to them both.

From Freshco I drove to the Rutland SaveOn-Foods and found the right product and with great effort got it to the till only to realize the bag had a tear in it.

A security guard offered to help and he carried the torn bag back to the isle where I’d gotten it from and I followed behind, dragging along a basket with wheels to carry the new bag in. He then helped by getting a regular shopping cart and I placed the product in there after scanning it at the self-check-out. However the package had to be removed and placed in the bagging area before I could pay for it and he jumped in once again to assist with some muscle, along with another employee.

The kind fellow offered to put it in my vehicle for me, which astounded me, as he was going above and beyond. I told him that would be great and I pushed the cart to the car. He followed me and thereafter loaded it in with a smile. I thanked him profusely and carried on my way home.

Once I arrived I used a folding shopping cart given to me by a former client who no longer needed it and she didn’t want to throw it away. I utilize it regularly packing groceries into the house and think of her each time.

I want to give a shoutout to the Freshco customers who had me go ahead of them in line and the Rutland Save-On-Foods security guard. You three were knights in shining armour in my books.

Chivalry (kindness) is not dead in Kelowna. Thank you so much!
