KRIS MARSHALL

-

Six years after the events of “Death in Paradise,” Kris Marshall returns to the role of Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman in the spin-off crime drama “Beyond Paradise.”

Currently streaming on BritBox, the series finds Humphrey out of the “Paradise” of the Caribbean and back on U.K. soil in the fictional southwest town of Shipton Abbott, where he’s now engaged to Martha (cast returnee Sally Bretton) and is surrounded by a new team of police, including colleague Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn, “Derry Girls”) and partner Esther (Zahra Ahmadi, “Doctor Who”).

But life in this seaside burg isn’t as sleepy as it seems and its unusually high crime rate puts Humphrey back to work on a new case in each episode.

For Marshall, stepping back into the character was a no-brainer and he found Humphrey’s maturity six years on and his established relationship with Martha appealing as well.

“You know, they’re a couple who found each other later in life,” he explains, “and (it’s about) the challenges they have to overcome and the personal journey they go on. You know, wanting to start a family and how to do that later on in life. But to me, it’s the way we change the denouements as well, the denouements are completely different.”

“I think it achieves that thing of like retaining the DNA and the interest of the original show, which is the lightheartedness and the puzzles,” he continues. “But it’s completely unique because it follows their personal relationships more closely.”

Favorite book: “I particularly like a book called ‘Breath’ by Tim Winton. I’m an old surfer myself and it’s a story that features surfing very heavily, so I would say that’s one of my most favorite books as a book I come back to. There’s also a book that I found self-published on Amazon so not a particularly well-known book ... called ‘Marigold Dark.’ And it’s about an alcoholic detective and it’s hilarious and it’s set on the island of Jersey. And it’s a little darker than ‘Beyond Paradise’; it’s a little darker than a lot of things, actually, but it’s darkly hilarious and heartbreaking as well.”

Favorite movie: “One of my most favorite movies is ‘Terms of Endearment.’

I’m going to say with ‘Withnail & I’ as well because I’m an actor. Obviously, it’s a seminal movie for actors because it so beautifully depicts the life of an out-of-work, broke actor – or two out-of-work, broke actors. But also because it has a personal interest to me because of the play that eventually takes I, Paul McGann plays I or Marwood is his name, off to a glittering career in acting once leaving Withnail to fester. The play that sends him off on that journey is a play called ‘Journey’s

End.’ Famous play by R.C. Sherriff, and that’s exactly the same play that was my breakthrough as well. So it has a sort of double meaning to me, really.”

Musical artist: “Oh wow, Radiohead, probably, because I was 17 at the beginning of the ‘90s and during the early part of the ‘90s their two albums that came out – ‘The Bends’ and ‘OK Computer’ – to me were seminal albums and I just can’t get away from those two albums as a sort of like a real seminal part of my life. So Radiohead and (Pink) Floyd as well. You know, I went to boarding school and everyone seemed to have the most eclectic taste in music, almost esoteric. We would listen to like Yes, we would listen to all those kind of things, so I’m a big fan of that as well. And I’m listening to a band at the moment, something more current called Manchester Orchestra, who I think are great as well.”
