Charlottet­own natives named top Panthers

Rugby’s Alysha Corrigan and soccer’s Jared Murphy are this week’s UPEI Panthers athletes of the week.

Corrigan, a firstyear business student from Charlottet­own, had a strong performanc­e in the Panthers 39-12 loss to Acadia in the Atlantic University Sport semifinal. Corrigan, who was named a player of the game, scored two tries, played physical and saved the team many times.

Murphy, a fifthyear business student from Charlottet­own, scored three of the Panthers five goals in a pair of wins over Memorial and Cape Breton.

Curley and Sanoh chosen as Hurricanes of the week

Soccer players Jill Curley and Ibra Sanoh are the Holland College Hurricanes athletes of the week.

Curley, a Summerside native in her first year with the Hurricanes, was named to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n’s first team allconfere­nce team on Friday evening and a finalist for the player of the year.

The Hurricanes defeated the University of King’s College Blue Devils 1-0 Saturday and lost 1-0 in the final to the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics.

Sanoh, a first-year striker from Conakry, Guinea, was named the ACAA men’s player of the year Friday after leading the country in goals with 26.

He was also named to the first team all-conference team.

Sanoh scored three goals Saturday as the Hurricanes defeated Crandall 5-0 and added one in Sunday’s final as Holland College beat UNBSJ 5-0.

He also won male athlete of the week ACAA honours.

The Hurricanes will represent the ACAA at the national men’s soccer championsh­ips in Oakville, Ont., Nov. 3 to 9.

The team is ranked fourth and will face the fifth-seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 AST and can be seen live at www.ccaa.ca.

Gallaway earns honour at University of Moncton

Stratford’s Kaitlyn Gallaway is this week’s University of Moncton’s female athlete of the week.

Fourth-year Blue Eagles forward scored her first university hat trick to lead Moncton to a 6-1 win over the St. Thomas Tommies Saturday in Fredericto­n, N.B.

Gallaway is tied for second in Atlantic University Sport scoring after two weeks of play with five goals and an assist.

Week’s top Mount Allison athletes are from Island

Men’s soccer’s Greg McGuire and Emily van Diepen of the women’s soccer and hockey Mounties received the honour on Tuesday.

McGuire, a fourth-year keeper from Summerside, finished up his Mounties soccer career last week with starts against UNB and Acadia. McGuire and his teammates lost 5-0 at UNB and finished up their season with a 2-0 loss to Acadia on Friday night. The Mounties finished the season 3-9-1 for eighth place in the AUS.

van Diepen, a fourth-year Mountie from Morell, was a big factor in the Mounties 3-0 win over Acadia to finish the Atlantic University Sport soccer season. van Diepen scored her fourth goal of the season as the Mounties’ handed Acadia its first loss of the season. The Mounties (36-4) finished in eighth place.

After the soccer season concluded, van Diepen suited up with the women’s hockey Mounties for their 1-0 overtime loss to St. F.X. on Saturday and their 7-2 loss at Saint Mary’s on Sunday.

Lynx spread scoring around in junior C hockey victory

Eight different Southside MacDonald’s Excavation EF MacPhee Lynx skaters scored in a 9-1 rout of the Sherwood Falcons in P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League action Monday at Cody Banks Arena.

Cody Miller (2-1), Rob Miller (11), Ryan Beckingham (1-1), Brandon Green (1-1), Colton Dawson (1-1), Taylor Buote (1-1), Sawyer Mayne and Michael Lawless lit the lamp behind Sherwood goalie Tyler Cameron.

Joel MacIsaac added three assists for Southside (3-0).

The Lynx led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 at the second intermissi­on.

Zack MacDonald had the goal for the Falcons (1-1).

Lynx goalie John Miller earned the win. Southside outshot Sherwood 55-41.

Matrix dump Red Devils in midget AAA hockey game

The Mid-Isle Robert’s Petro Canada Matrix rode a four-goal second period to a 7-3 win over the Pownal Gaudet's Auto Body Red Devils in P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League action Monday in Pownal.

Jacob Stewart (1-2), Braeden Stewart, Evan Noonan and Ethan MacFadyen scored in the decisive period for Mid-Isle and ruined a three-goal effort by Pownal’s Stephen Gaudet.

Mack MacGuigan (1-2) and Zach Kennific (1-1) and Brandon Bond had the other goals for Mid-Isle (31-1) while Bryce Thompson chipped in three assists.

Mid-Isle led 1-0 at the first intermissi­on and 5-3 after two periods.

Luke Dibenedett­o and Marc Cummiskey each added two assists for Pownal (2-3).

Matrix goalie Caelan Ferguson earned the win. Pownal netminder Colby Landrigan suffered the loss.
