Ellsworth part of Canadian rally at fastpitch qualifier

Brooklyn’s Jeff Ellsworth singled and scored in Canada’s seventhinn­ing rally to beat the United States 4-3 Tuesday at the Pan American fastpitch qualifier in Argentina.

Canada is 5-0 heading into today’s game with the Dominican Republic (3-2) at 4 p.m. AST.

Canada trailed 3-2 when Mathieu Roy started the two-out, seventh-inning rally Tuesday with a single. Ellsworth followed with a base hit and Joel Langford hit a three-run home run.

Andy Skelton picked up the win in relief of Devon McCullough and Derek Mayson while Paul Koert recorded the save.

Skelton hit a fourth-inning home run to tie it 1-1 before the States took the lead with a deuce in the bottom of the sixth.

Ellsworth, the team’s captain, also walked during a 1-for-3 day.

Former Blue Jay Alomar taking part in banquet

Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar will deliver the keynote address Nov. 8 at the Baseball P.E.I./Baseball Canada banquet.

“Roberto loves Prince Edward Island,” said Baseball P.E.I. president Don LeClair. “He has been here a few times for Blue Jays Academy camps and other arrangemen­ts, and has spoken glowingly about P.E.I. With the banquet concluding the Baseball Canada fall convention and Alomar being here for that, he offered to give the address. We were thrilled to take him up on that offer.”

Alomar was a key part of the Toronto Blue Jays back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

The evening starts at 7 p.m. at the Delta Prince Edwards

Island badminton players claim medals at N.S. tourney

Island badminton players posted solid results at the Nova Scotia Marathon meet held recently in Canning, N.S.

The juniors, all members of the 2015 Winter Canada Games training squad, returned with medals including Sami Yacoub, who nabbed a medal gold in the D Division with an 8-1 record and finished first in under-15.

Mohammad Ittani, with a 7-2 record, finished with a silver in the D Division while Andy Zou, 15, finished 9-1 in the A Division and earned a silver medal after losing to Island native Todd Gregory, the Atlantic champ, in the final. Gregory who won the A pool. Zou also placed first in under-18.

Yahaya Sefau was fifth in Division D (5-4) and Helen Li placed second in the U-15 age category.

Hafsa Abassi was third in the E Division and first in the under-13 age category with a 6-3 record.

O’Rourke rink reaches final of Lady Monctonian cashspiel

P.E.I.’s Kathy O’Rourke lost 8-2 to Nova Scotia’s Kelly MacIntosh in the final of the Lady Monctonian cashspiel Sunday in Moncton, N.B.

MacIntosh pulled ahead with three points in the third end and a stolen deuce in the fourth frame.

It’s the second straight year O'Rourke lost in the Monctonian final. Last year it was to Charlottet­own’s Suzanne Birt.

O’Rourke’s foursome includes Meagan Hughes, Robyn Green and Tricia Affleck. The fifth is Stefanie Clark, coach is Al Ledgerwood.

The other P.E.I. rink, skipped by Kim Dolan, finished 2-3 and out of the playoffs.
