A Charlottetown man who stole a woman’s purse that had her engagement ring in it was sentenced Monday to 60 days in jail.

Terrence James Barrett, 31, appeared before provincial court Chief Judge John Douglas in Charlottetown for sentencing for the theft and breaching his probation.

Barrett stole the purse from a Charlottetown restaurant that was under construction and Douglas ordered him to pay $2,500 in restitution for the items he took, which included an iPhone, the woman’s engagement ring and other pieces of jewelry.

Before handing down the sentence, Douglas said Barrett’s 24page criminal record was an aggravating factor in the case.

“It’s pretty much non-stop,” Douglas said.

For the theft, Douglas sentenced Barrett to 60 days in jail to be served on weekends and ordered him to pay the restitution along with a $200 victim surcharge.

Douglas also gave him 18 months of probation.

He also ordered Barrett to pay a $30 fine and $3 victim surcharge for breaching his probation.

After hearing his sentence, Barrett addressed the court asking not to have his name appear in the newspaper.

“I just don’t want to lose my job,” he said.

His lawyer had voiced his concerns earlier in the proceedings when she told the court he didn’t want to say who he worked for because he had lost his job after previous court cases were reported.

Douglas told Barrett he couldn’t order the media not to run the story and it was up to their discretion.
