Speeding, traffic violations major issue in Cornwall, says mayoral candidate

CORNWALL — Making Cornwall’s streets safer is Minerva McCourt’s first priority if elected mayor on Monday.

The mayoral candidate issued a news release Wednesday saying speeding and traffic violations are a significan­t issue.

“I have heard it ( from residents), I have seen it and I will be working with the RCMP and doing something about it as mayor,’’ McCourt said.

The incumbent councillor also pledges that she is committed to ensuring Cornwall is open to new business, responsibl­e developmen­t and fiscal responsibi­lity.

“Over the course of the campaign I have heard from the residents of Cornwall that they want a mayor that will work with them, a mayor that will listen and a mayor that will treat all residents with the respect and dignity they deserve.’’

McCourt added that during her time on council the past four years that she has listened to the residents’ concerns and made decisions based on their feedback.

McCourt has lived in Cornwall for more than 30 years, serving eight years on town council. She’s also been active in the community as a volunteer.

McCourt is running for mayor against incumbent councillor­s Corey Frizzell and Marlene - Elected to town council in a byelection in 2003. - Re-elected in 2004 for a threeyear term. - Re-elected in 2010 for a four-year term. - Currently serves as chairwoman of the finance and administra­tion committee, current member of the parks and recreation committee and planning board, past chairwoman of the parks and recreation committee. The next advance poll is Saturday with the actual voting day taking place Monday.

Cornwall voters can cast their ballots Monday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the APM Centre.
