Chaddock strikes in debut

Charlottet­own Islanders score rare win over the Mooseheads in Halifax

Chris Chaddock scored the game-winning goal in his first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game Wednesday as the Charlottet­own Islanders defeated the Halifax Mooseheads 4-1.

It was Charlottet­own's first win in Halifax since Jan. 6, 2012.

Chaddock, a 17-year-old centre who grew in the Saint John, N.B., area, scored at 7:52 of the second period with assists to Daniel Sprong and Filip Chlapik, who had two helpers on the night.

Guillaume Rioux-Legault and Luc Deschenes both scored their second goals of the season. Spenser Cobbold iced the game with a shorthande­d marker into the empty net with six seconds left. It was his first goal of the season.

Oliver Cooper, Dexter Weber, Kameron Kielly and Rioux-Legault added assists.

Philippe Gadoury from Timo Meier and Nikolaj Ehler scored a second-period power-play goal for the Mooseheads in front of 6,339 fans at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.

Mason McDonald, a Halifax native, made 36 saves for the win and was named the first star of the game. Zachary Fucale stopped 21 shots in the loss.

Halifax was 1-for-9 on the power play while Charlottet­own was 1-for-4.

The win improves the Islanders to 8-7-1-1 while the Mooseheads are 5-10-11.

The Islanders play in Moncton on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting the Mooseheads Sunday at 4 p.m.
