O’Shea throws gem as Islanders sweep Alpines
Dan O’Shea tossed a no-hitter Saturday as the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders defeated the Saint John Alpines 30.
The victory gave the Islanders the doubleheader sweep after winning the opener 8-2. The Islanders improved to 11-7 with their third straight win in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League while the Alpines are in the basement with a 3-16 record.
O’Shea struck out six and walked one for the Islanders.
The Islanders scored two in the top of the fourth to break open a scoreless tie when Alex Abbott delivered a two-run single. Sean Corcoran and Taylor Larkin each hit a double.
Brooks Saunders took the loss, giving up eight hits and two walks. Brody Chamberlain pitched one inning of relief.
The Islanders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning in Game 1 and did not look back. They tacked on three more in the second.
Jordan Stevenson went the distance to record the win, giving up two hits while issuing three walks and striking out three. Sherman Yeo took the loss in his first start of the season, giving up eight hits while recording seven strikeouts. Only four of the runs he gave up were earned.
Leadoff hitter Dylan McKenna went 2-for-5 with a single and a solo home run for Charlottetown. Andrew Macdonald had a single, knocked in two and scored a run while Sean Corcoran and O’Shea each doubled.
Adam Clark and Kevin DeSaulniers had the Alpine hits.
The Islanders return to action Tuesday when they host the Moncton Fisher Cats at 7:30 p.m.
