Watchdog probing police shooting in Toronto

MISSISSAUG­A, Ont. — Ontario’s police watchdog is investigat­ing the fatal shooting of a man after officers in Toronto responded to a report of a man armed with a hammer. The Special Investigat­ions Unit said the incident occurred early Sunday morning in west-end Toronto. The SIU said there was an interactio­n between the officers and a 45-year-old man, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigat­es reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegation­s of sexual assault.
