Watchdog prob­ing po­lice shoot­ing in Toronto

MIS­SIS­SAUGA, Ont. — On­tario’s po­lice watchdog is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the fa­tal shoot­ing of a man af­ter of­fi­cers in Toronto re­sponded to a re­port of a man armed with a ham­mer. The Spe­cial In­ves­ti­ga­tions Unit said the in­ci­dent oc­curred early Sun­day morn­ing in west-end Toronto. The SIU said there was an in­ter­ac­tion be­tween the of­fi­cers and a 45-year-old man, and one of­fi­cer dis­charged his firearm. The man was pro­nounced dead at the scene. The SIU is an arm’s length agency that in­ves­ti­gates re­ports in­volv­ing po­lice where there has been death, se­ri­ous in­jury or al­le­ga­tions of sex­ual as­sault.
