Opening day

Constable looking for good showing at amateur championship

- BY JASON MALLOY THE GUARDIAN

The P.E.I. Amateur Golf Championship begins today at Glen Afton Golf Club.

Adam Constable wants to stay focus and concentrate on his game today as he prepares for the opening round of the P.E.I. Amateur Golf Championship.

The 28-year-old Cornwall resident has home-course advantage at the Glen Afton Golf Club for the three-round championship, presented by Island Coastal.

“It’s my home course, so I imagine there will be a little pressure just being at home,” Constable said Thursday afternoon. “I’m definitely looking forward to it and I definitely have high expectations.”

Constable had a good final day at the Avondale Open and was tied for the lead after the first day at last weekend’s Mill River Open.

He currently sits third in the player of the year series with the amateur worth twice as many points as the other tournaments in the series.

Constable said there were a fewer groups of golfers at Glen Afton this week preparing for the championship. He shared a couple of tips with them and added the course is in good shape.

“You just have to keep the ball in play and hit as many greens as you can in regulation,” Constable said. “It’s a course you can really go shoot a low score, but if you’re not straight off the tees, you can find a little bit of trouble.”

This is the first time in a few years the men’s amateur and mid master divisions are threeround championships.

Tim Yorke said the threeround tournament should be a better gauge of who is the best player.

“You get a guy that can play hot one day and hang on the next,” he said.

Yorke said he expects experience and player’s mental approach to be key this weekend.

“You don’t have to hit the panic button and think you have to shoot 68 the first day,” he said. “Go out and play a decent round of golf and see where the scores are after Day 1.”

The senior and women’s divisions begin Saturday and play a two-round format.
