Dawn Alan receives Sinclair Cutcliffe Memorial Award
The Rotary Club of Hillsborough honoured one of its members with the presentation of the Sinclair Cutcliffe Memorial Award at a recent Thursday luncheon meeting.
Dawn Alan received the award, which is presented annually by the club president to a member who exemplifies the qualities of Cutcliffe and the Rotary ideal of “service above self.”
In addition to the citation, the recipient receives $1,000 of Club funds to be designated to the charity of her choice. The Sinclair Cutcliffe Memorial Award recipient will also be the recipient of the True Rotarian Award should that award be made by the District Governor in the fall of the same Rotary year.
Jennifer Dunn, outgoing club president, said Alan can always be counted on to work tirelessly on club projects as well as the day-to-day workings of the club to make it the best that it can be.
“She tends to shy away from the spotlight and, I think, prefers to be a cheerleader and takes great pride in seeing her fellow Rotarians shine. It is that generous spirit that I really took notice of and it became evident to me that our club’s success this past year was largely attributable to this Rotarian. Her community is one of her passions and she has carried that passion into significant work in the name of Rotary.”
Alan has worked with Downtown Charlottetown Inc. for the past 10 years as executive director. In addition to city centre business and economic development, project planning and management, her strengths include marketing, advocacy and community development.
She s a past-president and secretary of the club and a Paul Harris Fellow — one who exemplifies what a Rotarian is in all four avenues of service. She serves both as co-chairwoman of the membership committee and the program committee.
“Through her leadership, we grew our membership by 18 per cent in one year. She consistently delivered outstanding guest speakers week after week that both entertained us and educated us. She did all public relations for our club, and created and diligently updates our club’s facebook page to keep it current and fresh. She has been an exceptional ambassador for our club and I simply do not know how she does it all . . . . Because of her commitment and passion for our community, many of us have benefited from her tireless efforts and we are grateful.
Past recipients of the award include Don Scott, Sue Fraser, Frank Zakem, Eric Ellsworth, Jerry Ivany, Tom Davies and inaugural recipient David Jenkins.
