A jazz-inspired weekend set for Indian River
The Indian River Festival continues this weekend with two jazz-inspired concerts.
Matt Dusk and Eleanor McCain perform today at 7:30 p.m., and the Wolak-Donnelly Duo will take the stage on Sunday, July 19, 7:30 p.m.
Dusk and McCain, two longtime musical friends, have created a romantic, energetic musical experience especially for tonight’s Indian River audience. Dusk is one of Canada’s most beloved male vocalists, forging a career in music that has resulted in four critically-acclaimed studio albums and a Juno Award nomination. Dusk has been awarded two gold albums, one platinum album, three No. 1 radio hits and studied under jazz piano legend Oscar Peterson at York University. McCain, with the voice that garnered triple ECMA nominations for classical crossover album, loves a classic love song and an old time Celtic favourite. Hear songs from her new album, “Runaway”, as she and Matt team up with an ensemble of some of Canada’s finest jazz sidemen.
The Wolak-Donnelly Duo is comprised of clarinetist Kornel Wolak and pianist Chris Donnelly.
These two brilliant young Canadian musicians present a rare opportunity to hear musical styles crossing over through their very personal renditions of jazz standards and classical repertoire on July 19.
Focusing on the similarities between the genres rather than the differences, the duo entertains, informs and ultimately delights. Their program includes revered classical pieces such as Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Concerto, Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, and Oscar Peterson’s jazz classic Hymn to Freedom. These two engaging entertainers offer light-hearted, historical or personal perspectives on the music.
The festival’s new outdoor pavilion is now open one hour prior to show time - audience members are invited to enjoy the space and grab some refreshments before the show!
Both performances take place St. Mary’s Church, Indian River.
