Summerside couple gets go-ahead to add onto city home

- BY NANCY MACPHEE

City council has approved a couple’s plans to add on to their home.

Trent and Lisa Ranahan were seeking the approval of a major side yard variance to their home at 101 Newson Ct. so that they could build an 18-by-36-foot extension, allowing for a single-car garage, entry and family room.

The home is located on a corner lot at the intersection of Newson Court and Walker Avenue. The right-of-way widths on both streets are 20-metres wide, in comparison to the city’s standard 15-metre right away.

The issue was before a meeting of the city’s planning board Wednesday evening.

To accommodate the proposed addition, the side yard setback could not be met without the variance from the city.

The proposed setback for the side yard is about 2.74 metres. The city’s zoning bylaw requires a minimum setback of four metres in a single-family residential zone.

Letters were sent out to nearby residents, with only one response received, which was in support of allowing the variance.

Council, at a special meeting later in the evening, approved the extension.
