Canada chasing gold
AJAX, ONT. - Canada has advanced to the gold-medal final in men’s softball at the Pan Am Games. They got there with a 2-0 victory over Argentina in the one-two game Friday night. Prince Edward Islander Jeff Ellsworth had two walks in the game, and scored Canada’s second run on a Derek Mayson hit. Mayson hit 2-for-2, scored a run and drove in a run. Brandon Horn and Steve Mullaley both went 2-for-3. After being walked twice, Ellsworth lined out to third in his third at-bat. Ellsworth, who has a contingent of family and friends at the tournament, is thrilled about heading to the final, just two weeks after helping Canada win the International Softball Federation (ISF) world championship. And what would it be like to win gold again? “It would be pretty special,” he admitted. Sean Cleary pitched a compete game for the Canadians, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out seven. “He’s our ace,” Ellsworth said of Cleary, anticipating he will likely get the start in Saturday’s championship final.
