Schur­man chooses X

Summerside na­tive to study at St. F.X., play hockey for X-Women

Summerside na­tive Ly­dia Schur­man is one of six re­cruits to the St. F.X. women’s hockey pro­gram for 2015-16.

Schur­man played last sea­son at Ri­d­ley Col­lege in St. Catharines, Ont., where she fin­ished tied for the team scor­ing lead for the North Amer­i­can Prep Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion squad with 25 goals and 50 points in 52 games. “Ly­dia is an in­tel­li­gent player that works very hard and will add depth to the for­ward group for the X-Women,” said head coach David Synishin. “She had a lot of in­ter­est from NCAA and (Cana­dian In­teruni­ver­sity Sport) pro­grams, so we are for­tu­nate she chose St. F.X.

The for­ward was also a mem­ber of Team At­lantic at the 2013 na­tional women’s un­der-18 cham­pi­onship and skated with Team P.E.I. at the Canada Win­ter Games ear­lier this year in Prince Ge­orge, B.C. She scored a goal against the host team at the Canada Games.

“She was a first-team all-star in her prep school league, and is an ex­cel­lent in­di­vid­ual,” Synishin said. “She will fit in well with our team dy­namic and has room to grow within our pro­gram. We look for­ward to see­ing what Ly­dia brings to our lineup come Septem­ber.”

St. F.X. is the de­fend­ing At­lantic Univer­sity Sport champ. It hosts the UPEI Pan­thers on Fri­day, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m., to open the reg­u­lar sea­son.

Also sign­ing on with the XWomen are for­wards Brooke Nose­wor­thy (St. An­thony, N.L) and Emily Power (Air­drie, Alta.), de­fence­men Jes­sica Ged­des (Oakville, Ont.) and Al­ley Goodreau (Air­drie, Alta.), and goal­tender Car­ley Molnar (Lon­don, Ont.). They lost just three play­ers via grad­u­a­tion in for­ward Alex Nor­more and de­fense­men Jenna Downey and Kira Dube.


Ly­dia Schur­man will play for the St. F.X. X-Women this fall. She played for Prince Ed­ward Is­land at the 2015 Canada Games in Prince Ge­orge, B.C.
