Schurman chooses X
Summerside native to study at St. F.X., play hockey for X-Women
Summerside native Lydia Schurman is one of six recruits to the St. F.X. women’s hockey program for 2015-16.
Schurman played last season at Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ont., where she finished tied for the team scoring lead for the North American Prep Hockey Association squad with 25 goals and 50 points in 52 games. “Lydia is an intelligent player that works very hard and will add depth to the forward group for the X-Women,” said head coach David Synishin. “She had a lot of interest from NCAA and (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) programs, so we are fortunate she chose St. F.X.
The forward was also a member of Team Atlantic at the 2013 national women’s under-18 championship and skated with Team P.E.I. at the Canada Winter Games earlier this year in Prince George, B.C. She scored a goal against the host team at the Canada Games.
“She was a first-team all-star in her prep school league, and is an excellent individual,” Synishin said. “She will fit in well with our team dynamic and has room to grow within our program. We look forward to seeing what Lydia brings to our lineup come September.”
St. F.X. is the defending Atlantic University Sport champ. It hosts the UPEI Panthers on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m., to open the regular season.
Also signing on with the XWomen are forwards Brooke Noseworthy (St. Anthony, N.L) and Emily Power (Airdrie, Alta.), defencemen Jessica Geddes (Oakville, Ont.) and Alley Goodreau (Airdrie, Alta.), and goaltender Carley Molnar (London, Ont.). They lost just three players via graduation in forward Alex Normore and defensemen Jenna Downey and Kira Dube.
Lydia Schurman will play for the St. F.X. X-Women this fall. She played for Prince Edward Island at the 2015 Canada Games in Prince George, B.C.
