Hur­ri­canes start se­cond se­mes­ter with some strong show­ings

Hol­land Col­lege Hur­ri­canes men’s and women’s bas­ket­ball teams sweep their op­po­nents in week­end ac­tion.

The Hol­land Col­lege Hur­ri­canes vol­ley­ball and bas­ket­ball teams re­sumed the At­lantic Col­le­giate Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion (ACAA) reg­u­lar sea­son sched­ule dur­ing the week­end with de­cent re­sults.

The bas­ket­ball teams swept their op­po­nents on the road, while the vol­ley­ball teams had mixed re­sults at home and on the road.

Bas­ket­ball

Hur­ri­canes 73, Moun­ties 61

The women’s Hur­ri­canes de­feated the Moun­ties 73-61 in Sackville N.B., as Marvia Dean scored 16 points. Ash­ley Moss added 12 points and nine re­bounds, Je­nea Bar­ret had 12 points and eight re­bounds while Ja­zlin Barker and Can­dace Smith each added 11 points to Hol­land Col­lege’s at­tack.

The Hur­ri­canes led 38-34 at half­time. The squad im­proved to 6-1 and handed the Moun­ties (71) its first loss.

The Moun­ties went into the game ranked No. 4 na­tion­ally and the Hur­ri­canes were ranked eighth.

Hur­ri­canes 91, Moun­ties 68

A 25-point per­for­mance by Trevone Grant paced the Hur­ri­canes men’s team while Roo­sevelt (Chicken) Why­ley picked up the dou­ble-dou­ble with 15 points and 14 re­bounds.

Hol­land Col­lege led 39-34 at half­time.

The Hur­ri­canes, which cur­rently sit se­cond in the na­tional men’s bas­ket­ball rank­ings, are 9-0 this sea­son.

Why­ley (20), Jay­den Nordin (15), Grant (15), Muzher Mirza (15), Ali Ab­du­laziz (14), Stephon Smith (13), Mo­hamed Ibrahim (12) and Chidi Ma­jok (10) all had dou­ble-digit point to­tals Satur­day for the Hur­ri­canes in a 13541 blast­ing of the Dal AC Rams.

The Hur­ri­canes built quar­ter leads of 33-6, 74-23 and 102-35 to cruise to the win in Bi­ble Hill, N.S.

Vol­ley­ball

Women

Syd­ney Foy had 12 kills and 15 digs to lead the Hur­ri­canes and Olivia Dol­phin recorded three aces, but it wasn’t enough in a 31 (12-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22) loss to the Mount Al­li­son Moun­ties in Char­lot­te­town.

The se­cond-place Hur­ri­canes (8-2) will look to re­group on the road in Hal­i­fax against the UKC Blue Devils on Satur­day and Sun­day. The Blue Devils (3-6) sit in sixth place.

Men

The men’s Hur­ri­canes posted a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24) win over the Univer­sité de Sainte-Anne Dragons in Church Point, N.S.

Dar­cie Handrahan recorded six kills and three ser­vice aces to lead the Hur­ri­canes. Brett But­ler and Max Arse­nault each had six digs in the win.

The Hur­ri­canes (5-2) sit atop the ACAA stand­ings along­side the UNBSJ Sea­wolves.

Th­ese teams meet Jan. 23 and 24 at the Cen­tre for Com­mu­nity En­gage­ment in Char­lot­te­town.
