Hurricanes start second semester with some strong showings
Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams sweep their opponents in weekend action.
The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball and basketball teams resumed the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season schedule during the weekend with decent results.
The basketball teams swept their opponents on the road, while the volleyball teams had mixed results at home and on the road.
Basketball
Hurricanes 73, Mounties 61
The women’s Hurricanes defeated the Mounties 73-61 in Sackville N.B., as Marvia Dean scored 16 points. Ashley Moss added 12 points and nine rebounds, Jenea Barret had 12 points and eight rebounds while Jazlin Barker and Candace Smith each added 11 points to Holland College’s attack.
The Hurricanes led 38-34 at halftime. The squad improved to 6-1 and handed the Mounties (71) its first loss.
The Mounties went into the game ranked No. 4 nationally and the Hurricanes were ranked eighth.
Hurricanes 91, Mounties 68
A 25-point performance by Trevone Grant paced the Hurricanes men’s team while Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley picked up the double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Holland College led 39-34 at halftime.
The Hurricanes, which currently sit second in the national men’s basketball rankings, are 9-0 this season.
Whyley (20), Jayden Nordin (15), Grant (15), Muzher Mirza (15), Ali Abdulaziz (14), Stephon Smith (13), Mohamed Ibrahim (12) and Chidi Majok (10) all had double-digit point totals Saturday for the Hurricanes in a 13541 blasting of the Dal AC Rams.
The Hurricanes built quarter leads of 33-6, 74-23 and 102-35 to cruise to the win in Bible Hill, N.S.
Volleyball
Women
Sydney Foy had 12 kills and 15 digs to lead the Hurricanes and Olivia Dolphin recorded three aces, but it wasn’t enough in a 31 (12-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22) loss to the Mount Allison Mounties in Charlottetown.
The second-place Hurricanes (8-2) will look to regroup on the road in Halifax against the UKC Blue Devils on Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Devils (3-6) sit in sixth place.
Men
The men’s Hurricanes posted a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24) win over the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons in Church Point, N.S.
Darcie Handrahan recorded six kills and three service aces to lead the Hurricanes. Brett Butler and Max Arsenault each had six digs in the win.
The Hurricanes (5-2) sit atop the ACAA standings alongside the UNBSJ Seawolves.
These teams meet Jan. 23 and 24 at the Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown.
