A new event has been added to the Parks and Recreation Department’s 2016 Winter Active Campaign.
The public is invited to join the chair of the parks, recreation and leisure activities committee, councillor Mitchell Tweel, for a Winter Walk along the new Victoria Boardwalk.
The event, hosted in association with Beaconsfield Historic Home, will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24. Between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., come warm up in the Beaconsfield Carriage House with free hot chocolate and cookies.
“We’ll be hosting an official celebration of the new Victoria Park Boardwalk in the Spring, but this Winter Active Campaign provided us with an opportunity to encourage people to come out and enjoy the new boardwalk year-round,” says Tweel.
“The upgrades to the boardwalk are just tremendous and we shouldn’t let winter stop us from enjoying outdoor activities and this new infrastructure. We invite the public to come out on January 24 to enjoy our beautiful waterfront, some brisk winter air and, of course, our new boardwalk.”
The work on the boardwalk included: the removal of the old boardwalk, improving the drainage, upgrading the stringers, upgrading the decking to a marine-grade lumber, widening the boardwalk from eight feet to 10 feet and upgrading the material below and behind the benches.
In addition to the boardwalk event, the 2016 Winter Active Campaign includes other free activities designed to encourage people of all ages to be more active during the winter months. There is also snowshoeing, a 10week Learn to Run program, cross-country skiing and skating.
