In the world of music, there are always changes.

Bands lose members and take on new ones, artists begin solo careers and so on.

Last year Blanca, who had been a member of Group 1 Crew for nearly a decade, stepped out in faith to begin a solo career. With the release of her self-titled debut album, listeners have been learning that this was a good choice.

Produced by a plethora of experienced producers, including Seth Mosley, Blanca’s first solo project is quite pleasing.

The pop album opens with Different Drum, an energetic rhythmic track, with these lyrics: “We’re gonna march to the beat of a different drum...... and we’ll keep on movin’ because we’re not afraid to stand out.”

The first release from the album, “Who I Am” has seen tremendous radio play and for good reason. Blanca’s smooth vocals and the powerful message: “I’m running to One who knows me, who made every part of me in His hand/ I’m holding to the One who holds me.... cause I know who I am.... .I am sure/ I am yours.”

Get Up, featuring Lecrae, takes a page from Blanca’s hip hop roots. The driving percussion supports the energy through the track and reminds listeners “the whole world’s waiting on you.... it’s time to make a move/ get up/ work... We got one shot so we doin’ it/ Then it’s lights out/Ain’t playin’ games, still unashamed/ Not backing down.” It’s a wake up call to Christians that we only have one life to live for Christ and we need to get up and work for the kingdom.

Surrender is truly a prayer of surrender. Blanca sings about how we can give up on our fears and let God take over every part of our lives. Here’s a sample of the lyrics: “You can take all of me, all of me/ I surrender.... All the fear, all the shame inside of me/ All the pride, every insecurity/ All the guilt of the secrets that I keep/ Take it all, take it all/ Every hope, every dream, make them Yours.... Take it all, take it all.” The artist belts out the lyrics to this tender prayer of commitment and exposes her heart to her listeners.

Truly, this debut CD from Blanca is a terrific effort. The songs are generally very energetic pop tunes, but the heart behind the artist comes through in every track. Blanca has produced a quality album from a very talented artist.
