Abortion Access Now P.E.I. holding anniversary social

Group marks 28th anniversary of Morgentaler ruling

-

Abortion Access Now P.E.I. will hold a hot chocolate social to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the Morgentaler Supreme Court ruling and the group’s recent notice of application in the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island against the government of P.E.I.

It takes place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Gallery at The Guild, Queen Street, Charlottetown. All are welcome.

The social will include a discussion about the planned legal challenge to ensure full and unrestricted access to on-Island, publicly-funded abortion services for P.E.I. women.

“While

the

government

is considering their response to our application, we thought it important to hold a public event to discuss why this case must be brought forward as a Charter case,” said Ann Wheatley cochairwoman of Abortion Access Now P.E.I.

The group argues that, since P.E.I. is the only province in Canada that refuses to provide surgical abortion services in the province, it creates a violation of women’s Charter rights.

“We are hoping people will come out for a fun, relaxed evening of learning about the organization and consider joining us in this historic legal battle,” said Colleen MacQuarrie, cochairwoman.
