Chess tour­na­ment Sun­day at Colonel Gray

A scholas­tic chess tour­na­ment is set for Sun­day, Jan. 31 at Colonel Gray High School in the cafe­te­ria.

It’s open to all stu­dents from kinder­garten to Grade 12.

“Ev­ery­one plays at least four games. Stu­dents are di­vided into four or six player groups by age and rat­ing,” say or­ga­niz­ers.

Prizes for the top three play­ers in each group will be pro­vided, ei­ther a medal with rib­bon or a chess pin.

The Chess’n Math as­so­ci­a­tion rates the games.

En­try fees are $10 per per­son and $5 for se­cond and sub­se­quent play­ers in the same fam­ily.

Reg­is­tra­tion is 12:15-12:45 p.m. The first round be­gins at 1 p.m. The tour­na­ment is over by 4 p.m. (3 p.m. for younger chil­dren). To en­sure a start time of 1 p.m., reg­is­tra­tion will close at 12:45 p.m.

Dur­ing the tour­ney, or­ga­niz­ers will op­er­ate a can­teen and sell chess sets as part of their on­go­ing fundrais­ing.

This is the last monthly tour­na­ment be­fore the P.E.I. pro­vin­cial chess Chal­lenge on Feb. 28.
