Winter weather returns to P.E.I.

- BY DAVE STEWART THE GUARDIAN

A blast of winter weather appears to be headed for P.E.I. later today.

Environment Canada has issued three separate warnings for the province with the worst of the weather targeting eastern areas.

A snowfall warning has been issued for Queens County.

Meteorologist Linda Libby said the central region can expect between 15 and 20 centimetres with moderate to strong winds out of the northeast.

Kings County is under a winter storm warning. Folks can expect between 25 and 40 centimetres of snow with winds gusting, at times, to 70 km/h.

Libby said the difference between a winter storm warning and snowfall warning is wind, with the stronger gusts expected in Kings County.

Prince County is under a special weather statement and should see fewer than 10 centimetres, although depending on the track the storm takes the amount could possibly exceed 15 centimetres.

The snow is expected to start sometime Friday afternoon and last into the overnight hours to Saturday. Where winds are a factor, the worst of it will be during the overnight hours.

Some weather forecasters predicted a winter storm for Atlantic Canada earlier this week, but backed off over the last few days. Some said it would amount to no more than some flurries.

Libby said that’s because none of the three models used by meteorologists agreed. It all came down to which track the storm took coming up the East Coast.

“We’re looking at some local blowing snow as the snow starts to fall, and that’s looking at late afternoon into the evening,’’ Libby said.

Temperatures are expected to hover around the zero mark, meaning the snow will tend to be stickier and might not drift as much as it would if temperatures were a few degrees colder.
