Arsenaults record wins at home field in Summerside for P.E.I. Junior Islanders

Summerside natives Colin and Brady Arsenault earned the wins Sunday in Summerside as the P.E.I. Junior Islanders swept the Saint John Pirates in a New Brunswick Junior Baseball League doublehead­er.

The Island squad won all four games with the Pirates this weekend to improve to 13-9 and sit second in the five-team league while Saint John is last at 2-14.

Colin Arsenault went the dis- tance for P.E.I. in Game 1 Sunday, scattering eight hits, in a 5-4 win.

Tanner MacLean’s two-run single gave P.E.I. an early lead, which they increased to 5-2. Arsenault stranded the tying run on third to quell the Pirates comeback attempt.

Grant Grady and Jed Noonan each had two hits for P.E.I.

Nathan Betts took the loss while Ryan Vansnick had three hits.

Brady Arsenault struck out seven as P.E.I. won the second game 7-3.

He allowed six hits and didn’t walk a batter for the victory.

Saint John took a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer by Aaron Fournier and the lead held up until the fifth inning.

Grady’s base hit to centre field was misplayed and three runs scored on the play. Cole MacLaren followed with a solo shot to salt the game away.

J.J. Oram had two hits as all eight position players contribute­d hits. Aaron Ingersol took the loss.

Saturday

Spencer Horne dominated on the mound in Saturday’s opener, allowing three hits and striking out 11 in a complete game 9-1 win.

Grady was 4-for-4 to spark a 14-hit attack. Logan Gallant had three hits while Noonan and MacLaren each had two. Ben Richard took the loss.

P.E.I. had another complete game effort in Game 2, as Porter Smith got the win in an 8-6 victory.

P.E.I. jumped out to a 4-0 lead in first inning keyed by two-run single from Curtis McGregor and MacLaren’s two-run double.

Saint John answered with four runs of their own in bottom of second. The teams exchanged runs until then Islanders put the game away with two runs in the sixth.

Smith scattered eight hits and struck out eight. MacLaren had three more hits for P.E.I. while Oram and Kyle Pinksen each had two.

Ben Janes took the loss. James and Richard each had two hits.

P.E.I. wraps up its schedule Saturday with a doublehead­er against Moncton-based Metro at Memorial Field at 4:30.
