McKinnon hits grand slam as Islanders win sixth straight game

It’s six and counting for the Charlottet­own Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders.

Charlottet­own defeated the host Moncton Fisher Cats 6-2 Sunday in a New Brunswick Senior Baseball League game called after five innings due to rain.

Josh McKinnon provided the big hit for Charlottet­own, smashing a Luc Daigle offering over the left-field fence for a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the Islanders in control.

Charlottet­own sits in first place with an 18-7 record while Moncton (8-14) is in the basement of the fifth-team circuit.

Spencer Montgomery and Jesse MacIntyre each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Islanders. Montgomery had two runs batted in and MacIntyre scored twice in the victory.

Serge Vautour hit a solo home run and an RBI double to account for the Fisher Cats two runs.

Brody McDonald (4-2) held Moncton to two runs on seven hits in five innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Daigle (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Islanders are off until hosting Fredericto­n on Aug. 6.

Charlottet­own blasted the Chatham Ironmen 10-1 and 11-3 Saturday at Memorial Field.

Dylan McKenna, Andrew Macdonald, Sean Corcoran and MacIntyre each had two hits for the Islanders in the opener. Morgan MacLean, Dillon Doucette, McDonald and Montgomery each chipped in one hit.

Doucette drove in three runs while McKenna cashed two.

Jordan Stevenson allowed an unearned run on seven hits in six innings. He struck out two. Dylan Beck had a clean seventh to end the game. Jake Cook took the loss. Dylan McQuaid had three singles and two RBI in Game 2 for the home side.

McKenna, Jordan Duffy, Macdonald and McKinnon each had two hits while Dan O’Shea and Alex Abbott both added one. Macdonald and McKinnon each drove in a pair of runs.

Jacob Beck went six innings for the win. He allowed three runs, two of them unearned, on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Tyson Blue gave up two hits in an inning of relief. Charlottet­own’s Darren MacKinnon and Springvale’s Greg Proude finished four and fifth, respective­ly, Sunday at the Irving Oil Blending & Packaging 150 at Petty Internatio­nal Raceway in River Glade, N.B. Cole Butcher of Porter’s Lake, N.S., led 129 laps en route to his first win of the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour season. Farmington, Me., native Cassius Clark was second and Truro, N.S.’s Dylan Blenkhorn third. Brudenell’s Jonathan Hicken earned one of the three Atlantic Tiltload heat races. He completed 112 laps to finish 18th in the 23-car field. Cornwall’s Dylan Gosbee finished seventh, Crapaud’s Kent Vincent was eighth, Cornwall’s Joel Hickox was 11th, Albany’s Terry Dougay was 16th and Marhsfield’s Nevin Scott was 21st. The tour will make its only stop to Prince Edward Island Saturday for the Lucas Oil 100 at Oyster Bed Bridge Speedway. Tickets will be available to purchase at the gate on race day.
