Police issue warning

Immigratio­n scam making the rounds

Charlottet­own Police Services have received two complaints this month regarding individual­s posing as Citizenshi­p and Immigratio­n Canada officers who demand victims pay a sum of money or be arrested.

Police said the fraudsters claimed that if they are not paid, the Charlottet­own Police Services will arrest them. Police also said the scammers telephone number looked similar to the department’s when viewed on call display.

Police issued a statement from Citizenshi­p and Immigratio­n Canada on the matter:

“CIC does not telephone individual­s for the purpose of collecting money or a payment via telephone. While CIC may occasional­ly contact clients via telephone in order to collect additional informatio­n to continue processing an applicatio­n or with regard to requesting additional documentat­ion, CIC will never ask clients for any sort of payment via the telephone.

“In addition, CIC does not ask clients to confirm

basic personal informatio­n that has already been provided on an applicatio­n form (i.e. date of birth, passport number, etc).

“Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediatel­y and contact their local police to report the incident or the Canadian AntiFraud Centre.”
