Immigration scam making the rounds
Charlottetown Police Services have received two complaints this month regarding individuals posing as Citizenship and Immigration Canada officers who demand victims pay a sum of money or be arrested.
Police said the fraudsters claimed that if they are not paid, the Charlottetown Police Services will arrest them. Police also said the scammers telephone number looked similar to the department’s when viewed on call display.
Police issued a statement from Citizenship and Immigration Canada on the matter:
“CIC does not telephone individuals for the purpose of collecting money or a payment via telephone. While CIC may occasionally contact clients via telephone in order to collect additional information to continue processing an application or with regard to requesting additional documentation, CIC will never ask clients for any sort of payment via the telephone.

basic personal information that has already been provided on an application form (i.e. date of birth, passport number, etc).
“Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up immediately and contact their local police to report the incident or the Canadian AntiFraud Centre.”
